What is A Blackberry
The blackberry is in essence a mobile phone or a smartphone complete with a built in PDA (personal digital assistance). A blackberry is, at its core, an email/calendar-reading device that has PDA capabilities, a cell phone with the option to install and use third party applications.
The explosion in email use among business and consumer users can, in part, be credited to or blamed on the blackberry and its creator, Research in Motion (RIM). Unlike and other smartphones which periodicallly connects to your server to see if you have mail, the server with which your BlackBerry devices is paired will “push” new mail to your handset when it arrives- saving battery power and minimizing data use.
The e-mail service works in two parts:
1. Via the blackberry device
2. Email push which is managed in two ways:
a. The BlackBerry enterprise server (BES) which works dirrectly with Microsoft Exchange amd Lotus Notes mail servers.
b. The BlackBerry Internet Server (BIS), which is operated by service providers, such as cell phone carriers, to provide the push-email service to consumers with POP3 and IMAP mailboxes hosted by their home ISP or free providers, such as Microsoft and Google.
